 Difficulty Swallowing

How Does This Happen?

This annoying symptom occurs when the tissues in and around the throat are stretched and torn during whiplash. When someone is rear-ended the head and neck can be forced over the back of the seat until the back of the head contacts the seat back. This painful scenario occurs so quickly and forcefully, whiplash victims can endure problems with swallowing for extended periods of time.

What Can I Do To Help Myself?

Cold compresses to the back and front of the neck can reduce swelling and help make swallowing easier. Apply ice but never directly to the skin. Always use a towel between the skin and the ice. Later, use hot moist heat. If it's alright with your doctor of chiropractic, gentle movements of the spine can relieve the achy stiffness that accompanies this condition.

It's Still Bothering Me Now What?

A thorough examination of the throat and neck by a trained doctor of chiropractic can reveal problems many ordinary doctors miss. There may be several factors involved, including nervous system interference. Our center specializes in gentle techniques that reduce nerve interference and facilitate healing of the tissues involved with swallowing. If you're having problems with swallowing call our center immediately (303) 394-care (2273). Why suffer, insurance pays for our care.
