How Does This Happen?

This can happen when the joints of the neck are thrown violently out of alignment. The body senses something is wrong and releases an inflammatory chemical cascade. Fluids rush in and around the joints to limit the movements of the neck bones. This results in abnormal movements of the spine accompanied by "grinding" sounds.

What Can I Do To Help Myself?

Initially apply ice, but never directly to the skin. Always use a towel between the skin and the ice. Later, use hot moist heat. If it's alright with your doctor of chiropractic exercise using gentle movements to relieve the achy stiffness that accompanies these grinding sounds.
